Biological Soil Crusts: Boreal & Temperate Forests ????

Biological Soil Crusts on a Granite Rock Slab
For the record, this is a continuation of the first article I wrote on Biological soil Crust which dealt with the strictly conventional view of Bio-Crusts by those who have a career in studying them. But the reason for this post is mainly because most people in this world find Deserts boring and of little worth, so describing the incredible unseen microbial world there can be better appreciated through the eyes looking at an environment like forests. These organisms are basically the same kind of family group. It's just that in a Boreal forest with all their obvious colour and sparkle, people pay closer attention. That is the reason for furthering the subject with this post. So here was my first post on Biological soil crusts:
I was out walking through the woodlands with my wife just recently and observed something normally considered only a desert phenomena, yet there it was behind my house. Biological Soil Crusts in a Boreal Forest setting ? Hey, how about a Temperate Forest setting ? Most of the literature and folks who study these amazing natural wonders generally don't even come here with their work and the question has to be asked - Why Not ? It's usually considered a sort of Drylands Desert Thingy!!! But cannot those same biological components above in the photo on those granite rock slabs also be considered biological soil crusts in the forest floor ecosystem setting like the one behind my house here in Sweden ?

Let's see now, Biological Soil Crustal mechanisms by their very definition from soilcrust.org are officially cataloged as  "Major components are cyanobacteria, green algae, microfungi, mosses, liverworts and lichens." Well that would classify my backyard as a typical Biological Soil Crust Habitat , wouldn't it not ? But wait a minute, there's more to that soilcrust.org definition, take a look:
"Biological soil crusts are the community of organisms living at the surface of desert soils."

Woah, wait a minute, back up the Science Train for a moment. Why doesn't my "cyanobacteria, green algae, microfungi, mosses, liverworts and lichens" in my backyard qualify as official Biological Soil Crust ? Well I'm assuming it's because by the officially approved Panel of Peers definition such a plant community can ONLY be found in Desert Drylands. Yeeeaah and all Ferns only grow in moist lush Tropical, Temperate or Boreal Forests ONLY! Hey I didn't just fall off the Crust Truck you know. I appreciate and naturally so do many others who know me that I am not exactly your basic conventional Science Dude.

I have a habit of actually watching and observing nature and with practical applications on those observations, I tend to toss out the Ideological Assertions, Assumptions and Speculations for the FACTS as I observe them with my own eyes. I am also burned out with the way conventional science -based wisdom infected with various ideological philosophies has ruined our planet. So over the years I tend to be a healthy open minded skeptic. Sometimes that puts my understanding which has always resulted from making practical applications at odds with the conventional science follower types.


What I do know from experience and from my personal first hand observation is that things sometimes CAN be what they SEEM. The Biological Soil Crusts behind my backyard covering every exposed Granite Rock faces or shallow soils all through  these Boreal Forests serve the exact same function and purpose as those Desert Biological Soil Crusts. And what is it that they do ? They make Soil, just like they do in any other varied ecological habitat around the Earth.
When I first came here I was astonished at the sheer amount of granite bedrock everywhere around western Sweden. I wondered how anything grew at all in these Forests. Obviously LOTS of water takes care of that and it rains here all the time. Now in the past when we've had some periods of no rainy days lasting for a month and a half, many of even the bigger shrubs & trees on Hissingen Island, (it's really a Penninsula - but don't ask why !!!) will die. The soils are extremely shallow here, but what soils there are come from these magnificent biological machines. Take a look at this photo below of how common it is to have wind blown over or downed trees here. The average soil is just not that deep and it doesn't take an extremely violent windstorm to topple down the trees here.






Now to give you some geological perspective of Western Sweden, take a further look at the Göteborg Archipelago where the majority of the geology is exposed to the elements. However, in some small niches on these islands, there does exist some soil and vegetation. The tree fallen over here is an example of something that occurs all of the time. The soils are just not that deep here and what little soil there is, is from biocrustal breakdown on granite rocks. Where I come from in Southern California, such soils would never even begin to support any tree. Thanks because we do not have the constant steady rainfall that they have here in Sweden.



One of the things that first struck me when I first observed this tough seemingly harsh rocky granite  landscape is where did all of this soil come from in the first place ? If you listen to and believe the story that is told of the history of these particular geological formations of western Sweden with it's extremely abundant Archipelago island chain strung along all around it's coasts, is that it's formation came from the time period of when the Ice Age ended and the great Glacial receding came along and reveal this rock hard sterile looking landscape. Of course like all receding glacial landscapes, for many years there is this sterile appearance to it. Take note of this series of photos which reveals a seemingly lifeless barren landscape after glaciers disappear.

Okay, as you can see and take note above, this is common around the globe. But notice the sterile landscape for which is left behind after the glacier recedes. Makes sense. Every landscape starts with a blank canvas, so how did this particular soil develop over time to allow plant life to be possible ? Clearly seeds just don't blow in on the wind and take hold automatically transforming it into a brand new forested ecosystem. There are clearly a series of successional biological mechanisms which need to take place prior to this seeding event. This is where Biological Soil Crusts come into play. So assuming the Swedish nature Signage along the trail pathway was telling me the truth about how the Ice Age World  finally disappeared, then how did this Soil come about anyway ?

Spores of all these Lichens, Algaes, Mosses and various forms of fungi need to enter the scene first to create a foundational Soil system for the succession of life to begin. A clue for me on how this soil could have developed over time came from that top photo on this page. There was just something interesting I noticed.The rock face with the bio-diverse colonies of Lichens, Mosses, Algaes and Fungi/Bacteria was pock marked in a sort of checker board pattern and I wonder why and what could have done this. Take a closer look:


Now if you look closely, you'll see the area is clearly pockmarked as of some bird or animal were foraging around for some sort of sustenance. Of course the number one bird around here for this is the Magpie, but there is also a very large wild breed of pigeon which will graze areas in large groups as well. The nice side effect this has is constant turn over of organic matter. But no harm done as with the massive amounts of moisture received here, the mosses and lichens rapidly repair themselves in no time.


Clearly you can see something has foraged around and turned over some of the mosses looking for earthworms or sowbugs, both of which are abundant underneath this layer of living biological material. Below, let's take a closer magnification look at has happened exactly. These birds, Magpies, Jackdaws, Black Birds and even the large Forest Pigeaons which are quire shy are heavy feeders, especially in Springtime where they have young. After that their foraging habits tapers off, well except for the Magpies.

Okay so we get a good idea and picture of just what happens to these granite rock slabs and interestingly, these organisms seem to repair themselves much more rapidly so that by next year the whole process starts all over again the following year. But what happens to this material once it's turned over by these critters ? Well these granite slab and boulder formations here run for great lengths from north to south and there are many fissures, crevices and cracks running the same directions. It is here where the soil builds up and let me show you how. This next photo illustrates where the uplifted material goes once it's disturbed. It falls off the edges and into these voids or spaces only to collect and decompose. Not only organic matter, but bits and chips of the granite pebbles and sand grains themselves appear here. Take a look.

Here is an window into the world of the creatures I've seen responsible. These are birds for in or around the forests here. Take a look. This first bird here you will recognize, but it's far different than the common city pigeon you are use to seeing. It's called a European Wood or forest Pigeon (Columba palumbus) and this is the same ground foraging bird I photographed at the Gunnebo Estate in my other post. They looked like a covey of giant quails in groups of 12 - 15 rummaging around on the ground there.
This next bird is not just your common black bird. It is much larger and the male seen here with the yellow ringed eye and orange beak sings like a Western Thrasher or Mockingbird for those familiar with them, The female is dull sooty brown with dull brown beak. The male's singing is beautiful and echoes everywhere through the forest. The are ground foragers like the Pigeons and pick through the easy to turn over mosses and lichens. Actually, both the males and females are heavy foragers.
This next bird is probably more recognizable to most as they are found not only throughout northern/central Europe, but across North America and Asia in Siberia. We know it as the common Magpie, but they also are ground foragers and are often picking and turning over the mosses and lichens here. With that in mind, let me show you some other images of just where all of these Biocrustal Colonies love to show up here in Sweden. Actually anywhere they want. Often times houses with the clay-tile or stone roofs will need replacing if old enough. That's because on the north sides of roofs there are usually heavily encrusted mats of these lifeforms eating and chewing their way through the mineral material. After all, that's what they do. They also chew through headstones at the Cemeteries here and I have some photos of this. People after some decades will have to replace a family member's headstone if it has been severely damaged and crumbled by these crusts. These first two pictures are from the surrounding walls of one cemetery just to illustrate their prolific ability to colonize just about anywhere.

These next pictures are examples of grave stones. when my wife's grandmother died and we went up north for the funeral in this little small town with a small church with an attached cemetery, which was very very old, the wear patterns on the granite stones were extremely well worn and these living things were responsible for this break up of tough mineral rock material. Like the man made material of concrete and such, nothing is safe from these biological mineral breakdown machines.

Well that is enough material to illustrate just what these organisms are capable of doing for a healthy planet, even if we are inconvenienced at times. This cemetery was actually one of the more better maintained one's I've seen. It appeared to me that they have from time to time gone in here and pressure-washed most of the stones as a regular maintenance procedure. Unfortunately on many of these stones, the biological material in manufacturing some of those strong enzymes for which they accomplish their soil building and fertility processes have taken their toll on the normally rock hard material where even the pressure washing will pockmark out chips and chunks of stone which defaces the writing on the grave marker. Eventually the stones almost always have to be replaced, but not for some couple decades depending on how bad the environmental circumstances.

So should we consider these as Biological Soil Crusts ?  I think so. They are the same organisms with slightly differing functions in the habitats they are found but ultimately accomplish the same goals. This is not a definitions shell game or word semantics debate. Definitions have a way of changing as we gain more understanding. Why even the Antarctic and Arctic regions are technically deserts by definition. The both have extremely low humidity levels somewhere around 3% and extremely low precipitation averages, though you may not think it so. Cyanobacteria which is often spoken of as part of these desert crusts also accomplish this in the photo below.


Would you consider after viewing the above photo that these Cyanobacteria a desert ONLY organism ? No of course not. What the Swedish example does is focus attention on an otherwise ignored and discounted amazing biological process found in our desert environments. Yes they are different and yet the same. They work faster and greater which allows one to illustrate a process otherwise unseen or regarded as of little importance. This is now obvious with all the NOT-SO-ECO-GREEN ENERGY VENTURES which are now being bulldozed into the Deserts around our planet which is creating other ecological nightmares for which many of the companies involved couldn't care less.

What will they now do as a means of maintenance with these places ? Once the soil is stripped of their Biological Soil Crusts in these deserts, dust storms become far worse. As a means of maintenance, these companies cannot allow and biological growth in between these solar panels or other wind-energy units. Yet like the Oil Companies who create moonscapes inside of their oilfields for a purpose, then Eco-Not-So-Green Companies will most likely employ some of the same methods used by the Big Corporate Oil Industry to sterilize the soil around their oil wells. Ever see a sterilized looking oil field ? Wanna know why they are sterilized ?

You'll first off take note that I did NOT pull a picture out from a Saudi Arabian Desert Magician's black Top-Hat here. This is Belridge California. First off it should be noted that Oil Companies CANNOT afford to have dry grasses or anything else to facilitate the movement of a grass fire inside ANY of their fields.
When I worked for Coors Bio-Tech back in the late 1980s, we had an Orange Peel Solvent much like the picture here to the right called Bio-T Max. It is known by another name in the chemical industry called D-Limonene. It is water soluble and has numerous practical cleaning and degreasing applications. As a Manufacturing Representative for Coors Bio-Tech (yes the same Golden Colorado Company that makes Beer) it was my job to canvas for official distributors for this product. One of these was a Chemical Distributor of products to the Oil Industries from Santa Barbara to Bakersfield California. Very well known oil producing areas to many. Even Santa Barbara off the coast.
This chemical distributor even sold an incredibly industrial strength chemical herbicide that guaranteed his oil company clients that the herbicide would destroy all biological life on and under the ground and on top of the soil and prevent any weed seeds from germinating on that site for at least 7 years. I bet most of you didn't know this kind of stuff even existed. Monsanto created Agent Orange for the Vietnam War as a Tropic Forest defoliant for which these areas today are still mostly desert regions. And yet these Oil Companies still need or require a strong chemical sterilizer to keep fields plant life free. Only a Armageddon sized event will stop it

What do you suppose all those Not-So-Green-Energy Companies will be using as far as ongoing Land Management Soil Sterilant programs ??? Will they even use one ??? They have to maintain a plant-free zone under solar panels to prevent wildfires and hiring manual labor for a permanent maintenance solution to keep the dust down. Of course that'll be cutting into profits which is what all these schemes about in the first place. Have they even considered a company which manufactures a Biological Soil Crust Inoculum for which a healthy more ecologically sound solution would correct an already mistake ridden system ? I doubt it. However, someone should monitor what they intend on doing to the soils out there as a means of regular maintenance. The facts here show and prove that there are many many amazing things out there in the natural world yet to be discovered, researched and understood for use as a practical application for proper custodianship of this Earth. No matter what or how we want to define these amazing organisms, or what personal professional bias we have on these subjects, the work with which they accomplish everywhere around our planet Earth should be admired by everyone. To that end I hope I've made an otherwise boring science subject fascinating to the average person.

Biological Soil Crusts: What Are They and Why Should I Care ?

Dr Mike Amaranthus, Ph.D. the adjunct associate professor at Oregon State University and President, Mycorrhizal Applications, Inc. has this very short video on his website which is certainly fascinating, but is a bit general and leaves so many more questions wanting for answers. So let's take a quick view of what Dr Mike was referencing here on these two very short videos, yet pact with powerful information which I will further discuss below. The first video is wonderfully illustrating how mycorrhizal fungi bind together the soil and what exactly they do for plants in the process. It is a mere 35 seconds in length:


This second video is only 46 seconds in length, but there is one sentence at the beginning of this clip that stands out where Dr Mike is speaking of what the mycorrhizal fungi can do for soil, especially sand grained soils. Pay close attention. Play over and over if you have to.

  Dr Mike may not even be aware of the powerful impact of those opening statements, though I know he's a smart guy, but it has importance in understanding how to reconstruct degraded habitats by using the actual designs we can find out in the natural world. Especially such areas with Desertification problems caused by human ignorance, stupidity & idiocy. Let me actually quote those opening words from the above video since it is the subject of my post here:

"The Mycorrhizal Fungi produce a sticky glue like substance that will take Sand Grains and bunch them together into stable agregates that allow for the better movement of air and water into the soil."
So let's get to the meat & potatoes of the subject of this post. Dr Mike may not have necessarily been speaking about such subject matter of Biological Soil Crusts, but his take and knowledge on what goes on in the soil and ability to illustrate these mechanisms is most welcome. Especially this subject which for the most part would be lost by the general readers, let alone researchers who no doubt miss much of the value on this subject of Biological Soil CrustsSo here are all the terms for this other rather unique and intriguing incredible Earth Internet Hardware feature:

Introduction:

"In many ecosystems of the world's biological soil crusts play an important role for ecosystem processes. These biological crusts (also called microbiotic, microphytic or cryptogamic crusts) are assemblages of cyanobacteria, green algae, mosses, liverworts, fungi and/or lichens. BSC are highly stress tolerant under extreme environmental conditions and therefore widespread in many ecosystems from the deserts to polar regions. The biological soil crusts decrease infiltration rates and, thus, run-off could be observed even in a sandy area when covered by a biological crust. In addition to the influence on the hydrological conditions, the biological crust also stabilises the topsoil, reduces soil erosion, and enhances the nitrogen pools by nitrogen fixation. The understanding of pattern formations and interactions with biogeochemical and biotic processes are important for ecological theory and for applications in restoration ecology and combating desertification"

It's incredible, but as stated in the Introductory by Dr Maik Veste, these Biological Earth Crusts are not made up by just one organism, but a collection of an assemblage of symbiotic organisms which have formed a cooperative extension of sorts which seeks not to out compete each other but rather cooperate for the survival benefit of each other. They are basically 'cyanobacteria, green algae, mosses, liverworts, fungi and/or Lichens'. These crusts, a tightly bound mesh of various cyanobacteria, Lichens, Mosses, and Fungi, hold the soil down, prevent soil erosion, and may even provide a hospitable environment for germinating plants. They were most likely the first land-based plant communities to appear on Earth to help prepare the soil for the other successions of plant life which came afterwards.

As Prof Suzanne Simard stated:  
 "Mycorrhizal Symbiosis is not some mindless competition and 'Survival of the Fittest' game, but rather what we see is in fact they're interacting with each other trying to help each other survive."
These Biological Soil Crusts are very common throughout the deserts southwest in the United States where many folks most likely have seen them but probably walked all over them not realizing the vast potential role these play in that Desert Ecology's soil stabilization. This is why in some places in the past Off Road Vehicle Restrictions use have been enforced through various laws and other rules by the Bureau of Land Management or Anza Borrego Park Authorities to the irritation of many opponents who resent the restrictions and feel their behavior in no way impacts what they considered no more than dirt that blows around in the next wind storm and repairs itself quickly. Well, that's what excessive amounts of Beer which dehydrating the body will do to one's thinking and reasoning ability in the Sun & Heat of high noon, but let's take a look at these photos anyway.

Now here are much larger wide angle views of what we're talking about on the surface, which you have most likely seen but never realized their importance or even existence before.





Now I know half you people out there have seen these features in the high & low deserts before, you just never gave it a second thought. Hopefully your appreciation has been deepened as you find out just exactly how important and complex these bits of hardware are to our desert environs and the respect they should be accorded. 
Well now of course those were the desert habitats, but what about other areas ? Are biological crusts found in and around other various ecosystems as well ? You bet they are and let me give you one prime example of one unique interior valley foothill system which greatly supports all those wonderful beautifully green high mountain forest systems that most people seem to prefer. I truly hope that after this very new revelation to most, you'll walk away with a far deeper heartfelt appreciation for an ecosystem that is mostly ignored as having very little value, even though it is a very much foundational one. I'll make this system's importance real easy for anyone to verify. 

These next three pictures below are for folks who live out in the Riverside County California region. These are pictures of State Highway 74 driving up from Hemet California to Idyllwild California. I'm wanting to focus particular attention to the Chamise or Greasewood  (Adenostoma fasciculatum) chaparral community type habitat which exists on those southern facing slopes you observe especially above the north side of the highway as you head east on those south facing steep slopes. This poor shrub is demonized and undervalued as having little or no worth. It's something to be removed and replaced by more "Eye Candy" appealing shrubs. It's often criticized as being invasive and taking over desirable habits. But most often these remarks are based on an individuals own ignorance of the foundational importance of this plant community to all other attached ecosystems it is interconnected with. Take a look here at what most people see.


Adenostoma fasticulatum is another example of no respect and yet it is potentially one of the greatests assets in waiting patiently for climate circumstances to change and allow forest pioneer trees to invade and succeed in spreading the tree habitat as they later yield.

Yup, sure enough, that's the culprit. Dry nasty, stickery and jagged looking. Why you can't even hike through that stuff without tearing up your clothes and cutting or scraping your own skin. Worthless and aesthetically unappealing. It's ONLY a fire hazard. Once established it just seems to take over and nothing else can grow there. Is all of this really true ? ? Well in a word - NO! It's certainly true that this shrub is one tough cookie. It tolerates drought and nasty dry conditions better than most any other shrub out there and I must honestly & admiringly state here it can & will grow where no other shrub is able. Given the right conditions however, it's the other shrubs which will invade this plant's territory by naturally moving it out, not the other way around. It's ability to stabilize slopes and other weak geological soil conditions is absolutely amazing. Now on that drive up on State Highway 74 from Hemet to Idyllwild, you really need to notice the lack of any real stable bedrock in the geology of all those foothills. You can observe this from all the road cuts. Broken fractured rock mixed with decomposed granite and sand does not make for stability if plants are absent. Look at many of the weaker California coastlines and their landslide history which is exacerbated by human activity immersed in ignorance. You will see identical landslide history on the way up this San Jacinto River Canyon in these lower San Jacinto Mountains foothills areas.
Actually this plant has some very remarkable qualities. Here are some pertinent facts. Did you know that it's roots system is extremely extensive and by volume out competes even it's own above ground canopy ? Did you know that it's roots are usually deeply penetrating, multiple branched taps roots and wide spreading lateral roots? These multiple branching tap roots can dig down deep into the soil to some 10-12 feet under ground or even more. It also has a growth phenomena of it's lateral roots and branches which sprout and grow out from what is called a Lignotuber , which means it has a starchy swelling of the root crown as a protection against destructive wildfires. This crown contains buds which almost immediately sprout back after a fire and survives as a result of the starchy nutrient stores in its base which will support this growth in the absence of photosynthesis and until the next seasons rains come in. Take an example view of a Lignotuber and appreciate this incredible piece of Earth Internet Hardware.

Okay, so what does all of this have to do with Earth's Internet blog and this post's subject matter about Biological Soil Crusts ? Simple, this plant as other plants and or all various forms of mycorrhizal fungi referenced on this blog are perfect examples of Earth Internet Hardware. And that's all they are is Hardware. However it's the genetic material that is the software which programs, controls and drives the machinery to work in perfect harmony when allowed to do it's job correctly. Human interference and ignorance as common Layman have been the only problem for this incredible biological machinery. Understanding these networks and consulting a virtual owners manual is the only way to properly understand and work with these mechanisms for the benefit of our planet's health. 
San Jacinto Foothill's Biological Crusts 
There is an incredible variety of a Lichen/Moss Bio-Crustal  combo habitat type that grows in horizontal terraced like patterns around or intermingled with these individual Chamise trunks & roots systems. Hence they form a mutualistic symbiotic relationship with one another in holding these foundation foothill topsoil together. They tend to grow horizontally in a sort of terracing pattern on these slopes. These moss/lichen combos are only a couple of  inches high and I have never found very much info on them other than way back in the early 1980s while listening to some special firemen called Hotshots speaking about this plant as they were cursing it's tough ability to stay put when they were trying to make fire breaks to stop the approach of an oncoming brushfire.

For further info on the fascinating erosion control and environmental importance of this chaparral plant please follow this link:

Below here are some photos of various Bigelow's Spike Mosses Selaginella bigelovii which are part of this important habitat along with Lichen associations intermingled with one another. This plant reproduction and spread are fascinating as well. It doesn't necessarily spread by seeds or spores so much as it spreads through underground Rhizomes into newer territories. Clearly this also qualifies it an an important internet component to be utilized in any habitat restoration project. This Spike Moss - Chamise combo allow every raindrop to slow way down and filter or percolate into the soil. If the soil is saturated, then it's simply acts to slow this movement down. Any of those hills I saw during the rainy season showed water trickling down normally dry washes in a crystal clear form. Never did I observe silt or any other debris. Only in human disturbed areas would you see this.

Here is a prime  example of some human ignorance and stupidity that was done along time ago (literally decades) and I have to assume it was done when California State Hwy 74 was first constructed so many years ago.  As you drive east from Hemet and you pass over Strawberry Creek, then two miles past that the road turns west and begins to take a steeper upwards climb before once again u-turning towards the east towards Idyllwild. It's straight for about a mile or so and then twists it's way up to a turn-off which is used by Cal-Trans Highway Maintenance Crews who store road gravel in large Bins or Bunkers on a rather large turnout area. This is also the location for hikers to park their cars and take a hike on what is called the South Fork Trail. This trail leads to the river canyon views of the south fork of the San Jacinto River which itself comes out from the Lake Hemet Dam which is way further up that valley.

Now across from this turnout on the opposite side of that same highway you will see an Arroyo or Creek area where poking up out of all that Chaparral are some prime examples of large Coulter Pines and California Sycamores. This is odd because I always wondered while driving countless trips up and down that mountain when I lived up there and commuted to work that how odd it was that such trees would appear here for no natural apparent reason. What was the seed source I wondered ? Obviously this tiny Arroyo which the road crosses over a few hundred feet past the Cal-Trans turnout must have it's original source from the Baldy Mountain area which is (or was) heavily forested. I was correct, it did come from that source. I always noticed however that during heavy rain periods in winter there was never a dramatic flow of water, there was some, but not the kind that would wash seeds down from that huge mountain and not enough to support California Sycamores which are a water loving tree in this region. So what gives ?

One day my curiosity got the better of me. It was still springtime in 1983 and I parked my truck and left it at the turnout area. I walked over to where the road had a very small culvert over this rather large Arroyo. I hiked up this small narrow gorge that cut through the rocky granite boulder bed-rock hills above the Hwy 74 and came out on the other side and sure enough the source for that former water course and seed base was from the Baldy Mountain wilderness area. But the water no longer went this direction. Why ????? Well I saw why! When the road construction was done, they had taken heavy machinery up here most likely by way of that South Fork Hiking Trail and deepened the creek channel and straightened channel and lowered it deeper than the original creek to divert the creek's water directly west instead of the natural land flow  which went north towards and under the State Route 74. So no longer does water flow through it's natural water course that nature carved out, but now it drops off rather abruptly into the South Fork river basin. The consequence of this diliberate stupid ignoramous act is that an entire face of that section of the mountain which cannot be seen from the highway at all, has caused a giant landslide for which there is no control for which  to correct it. An entire west flank of this valley just drops straight off into a deep abyss straight down to the canyon bottom. I know because I followed this channel full of swift running water to the water fall that was eroding the soft fractured cliff face. It's a radically dangerous place to be and no doubt collaspes further everytime heavy rains come. To give you an idea of scale, this area of Earth geology which collapsed into oblivion is probable the size of Rattlesnake Mountain in El Cajon which I have previously written about on my other blog. There that much of a mountain collapse that is truthfully hidden from view. I was just sick when I saw it.

Okay getting back to the O.P. of this post. The point is that this geology is tightly held together by this amazing Chamise-Bigelow Spike Moss bio-crustal connection. Removal of it or diliberate destruction can have catastrophic consequences. I figure there were most likely two possible explanations and Parties involved here for this stupidity which was no doubt was motivated by the usual selfishness and greed. First there would be the easier road maintenance factor. That's a given. But also, in that South Fork River Basin flood plain valley is an Acquaduct dam syphon which channels water or at least it did down to Hemet Valley Reserviors which served a massive agricultural interests in the valley below. Today it serves a sprawling urban population. I don't think most folks know about this story or it's history. Certainly the Forestry must know of it but have thus far kept their collective mouths shut. Of course out of sight out of mind. But now hundreds of others of you know of that un-natural disaster tragedy of Human making. Any of you now can verify this by visitng and observing with your own eyes what I've just related to you all. It will be beneficial for you to go to Google Earth, type in the coordinance of the Hwy Route 74 & South Fork Hiking Trail and magnify it until you can place the yellow man figure at that turnout. Then pan around with the camera feature and notice the exact Cal-Trans spot with the trees on the opposite side of the road. They are still there because I just looked. You can also drive the little virtual car feature so to speak further east if you know how to work Google's system and you will come to a road sign which says Elevation 4000'. This is the location where the road passes over the Arroyo (I don't even know if it has a name) which has been dammed with only a small culvert to allow the smaller amount of runoff through it. Sadly it's technically no longer a creek. Pan up over to the right and you will notice a burned area where some idiot back in the late 1990s start a fire which burned all the way to Lake Hemet via Baldy Mountain. Incredibly one of the US Fire bosses in charge commented that they were wanting to control burn that heavily dense area anyway and glad it finally happened. Seriously that's what came out of his mouth!!! Anyway, if you know what to look for, you can also Satellite image and pan over to where that landlside scar stands out like a sore thumb.
But just to emphasize, this geology needs this cooperative symbiotic relationship of Chamise & Bio-Crust on those foothill slopes or the entire mountain system collapses.
Well okay - back to the original subject again.

It's a shame more work and research isn't done to understand more about this amazing feature of our natural world. There are some dedicated to doing just this. Who knows, maybe Mycorrhizal Applications Inc or some other company not connected to Monsanto will come up with a powdered form of instant Bio-Crust Earth Repair as a product line. There are areas for great potential for turning desertification damaged areas around to what they once were or better. Here's an example of some dune stabilization in Pakistan. In conclusion I'll stop here and later show practical applications for not only dune stabilization, but actual possible strategies for turning unproductive heavily eroded badlands into desert Oasis. At the very least, teaching folks in places like Pakistan (Above example) or Africa how to turn things around. Of course like everything, this is not a simple matter of a materialistic Fix-it pill solution. People's attitudes have to change otherwise the knowledge and techniques are worthless since it was mostly piss-poor attitudes which ruined everything & got our planet Earth where it is today in the beginning.
